The wet climate of the Seattle winters can make substantial remodels a sensitive prospect for much of the year. To our great fortune, the remodel we started this week is predominately interior work. That paired with the slab on grade structure, few finish materials remaining and our Lakeville’s careful attention make this an ideal winter project. Gelotte Hommas Architecture has been working with this couple, east coast transplants, to transform this rustic and eclectic house in a picturesque setting, to something that is updated, comfortable and decidedly more upscale.
With a setting such as this, it’s easy to see what the client’s fell in love with.
As promising as the “big picture” is, the details currently lack refinement. The existing home has some shortcomings including an archaic and inefficient heating system and a layout that just doesn’t work. However, this home’s new owners have vision and the architect to help in their realization.
Huge interior volumes paired with a mish-mash of windows and doors (sizes and materials). Lots of do-it-yourself touches on this house.

Questionable finish selections and installation. Not as apparent in this image is the plethora of finish materials used throughout the house.

A close up of the finish carpentry. Although it is possible that this was fully intentional, I speculate that a saw might have been set at the wrong angle, and this was the design that resulted for some of the windows.
With this team in place, I have no doubt that this house will be nothing short of spectacular when complete. Phase 1 will make this home comfortable. But Phase 2 is what will really make it special. We are thrilled to be a part of this project and excited to see it take shape.
With about 1/2 of a day’s work in so far, we were at the early stages of demolition. Stay tuned for updates to see the bedroom wing of this home transform.
